It ain't broken but Spurs are trying to fix it

If it wasn’t for Chelsea’s remarkable - and at times improbable - Champions League triumph, Tottenham would be gearing up for another assault on the tournament themselves, this season.

It would have been the second time in three seasons that the London club had made it into Europe’s premier competition, no mean feat, considering the vast resources available to other sides at the top of the Barclays Premier League.

Yet the man behind these achievements – Harry Redknapp – was deemed not suitable to take the club forward, and was sacked last month.

Now, internal politics and varying external factors certainly appear to have played their part, but it is still an extraordinary risk to get rid of a manager who has revived their fortunes over the past few seasons.

As he is so quick to point out, they were bottom of the league when he swept into White Hart Lane four years ago.

The club’s choice of replacement, Andre Villas-Boas, is an equally risky appointment.

He certainly fits the continental image the club are trying to aspire to, but his shortcomings and inexperience were cruelly exposed during a nightmare stint at Chelsea.

Prior to his move to Stamford Bridge, AVB had become one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches, following a glorious season with FC Porto, where he won the league (without losing a game), the domestic cup, and the Europa League.

A fine achievement sure, but it does pay to remember that the Portuguese League is a limited one, dominated by the same few sides. It was perhaps his previous pedigree as a coach – including under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea – that attracted so many clubs.

Still, this year will only be his third as a manager and, although he will be determined to prove a few people wrong after his nightmare at the Bridge, represents a very risky strategy from Tottenham, and one that could cost them dearly if it goes wrong.

Fans of Spurs will no doubt be hoping for a few positive live scores results, this autumn.
