Gartside Publicly Backs Harry Redknapp for England

Bolton chairman and FA board member Phil Gartside has publicly backed Spurs boss Harry Redknapp for the England job, becoming the first influential member to do so.

Redknapp is the hot favourite in the online betting to be named as the next Three Lions boss and has said in the past he would find it very difficult to turn down the top job if it were offered to him.

Gartside sits on the 14-member FA board and is set to have a say on who will be approached for the England position, although he is not part of the four-man panel who are in overall charge of making the appointment.

Gartside will, however, have the chance to ratify any decision, and has said the experienced boss could be an "outstanding England manager", and, in an interview with BBC World, described the former West Ham, Southampton and Portsmouth chief as someone who is a a "good motivator with a winning mentality".

The four men given the task of finding a suitable successor to Fabio Capello following his hasty resignation in February are; director of football development Trevor Brooking, general secretary Alex Horne, Club England managing director Adrian Bevington and FA chairman David Bernstein.

Redknapp and the FA have, up until now, stayed tight-lipped over the England vacancy while the Spurs boss has insisted he remains fully committed to the White Hart Lane job until the end of the season at least.

Other potential candidates in the odds betting include West Brom boss Roy Hodgson and current caretaker manager Stuart Pearce, but it seems Redknapp is the overwhelming choice of fans, FA officials and the England players and it would now be a big surprise if the 65-year-old is not appointed before this summer's European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.
